John Abernathy stood on the balcony outside his cabin, and when the small boat started its exit from the main harbour of Port Royal, he immediately noticed something off. It sat far too low in the water, far too low for a skiff merely carrying a few crates of chickens extra anyway. He picked up his looking-glass and focused on the moving and bobbing boat, almost hidden by the wild swells and breaking waves around it. “Bloody miscreants!” he mouthed, “You cannot trust anyone to simply do as told anymore!” He felt his ire rise at the sight, and his head began to pound. There were two extra people in the boat, and one was definitely not a pirate.

He looked very closely, following the little figure. He had blonde hair, short and curly, and there was something familiar about him. He couldn’t quite place it. The man seemed like any other, although he had the bearing of a soldier and sat straight as a bolt in the boat, probably another run away who wanted to join a buccaneer crew. There were new ones every time they pulled into a port, especially Tortuga.

Port Royal was a place where they hardly ever called in. The navy held far too big a presence here, and John wasn’t the type to risk his crew without good reason. As he watched the boat approach, and heard the murmurs from his crew, who hadn’t yet noticed a blond man who was awfully clean, he wondered what was coming his way. He made his way down to the main deck, and stood front and centre amongst the three hundred or so men, waiting for the small party to board.

“Captain, I see there be an extra man on board the boat with Pip and Badger, did ye know about this?” his Quartermaster asked, eagerly stroking the whip he held in his hands. Mr. Anders loved handing out discipline, and his beloved dark leather cat-o-nine-tails was well feared by the men.

Black John stared him down so hard the man took two steps back. “If I had known about it, I would not be standing here as curious as the rest of you scum, now would I?” he roared in his face.

Mr. Anders paled as Black John faced the sea again, smiling to himself. He maintained the fierce temperament his crew had come to fear in public, and occasionally enjoyed seeing them shake in their boots like this, especially when he was in a bit of a foul mood.

He straightened his coat, checked the gold braiding and pulled in his belly. He was an impressively tall man with a wide barrel chest, and his wild hair fell over the lapels on his chest. The locks of hair were still jet-black and complemented his dark, almost black and unfathomable eyes. Only the hair at his temples was shot through with silver, and his long beard greying around the bottom. He looked roguish, with his cutlass at his waist, and a set of pistols at his back.
